Canine Epilepsy | (Useful links for those wanting to learn more) | This Page is dedicated to Our Zoë | (Beljekali Indian Summer C.D.). | Zoë suffered from severe idiopathic/primary epilepsy and was released from her torment on the 26th of June 2008, nearly 6 years old. |
Epilepsy is in all canine breeds and research is ongoing to try and find the genetic marker(s) responsible. Unfortunately, no genetic marker for epilepsy in Belgian Shepherds has been identified, so at this stage we do not know which dogs may be carriers. The International Epilepsy Register of The Belgian Shepherds is a wonderful resource made possible only by those breeders and owners willing to list their dogs, suffering from epilepsy, on this Register. For any Breeder, breeding dogs that achieve in either Show or Working competitions is a wonderful endorsement of their breeding and great advertisement for their kennel and they rightly should feel proud of these dogs and enjoy their successes. However, as an owner of an epileptic dog, I urge breeders not to forget these less fortunate dogs that were also bred under their prefix nor their owners who live with the horror and heartache of epilepsy in their beloved dog that once was a cute little pup bringing high hopes and expectations. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I will gratefully receive more canine epilepsy related links to add to this page. | |
